Julie Bender - Pyrography

"Stunning photographs and beautiful wood are the foundation and inspiration for my art. I am enthused by the process of “painting with heat.” Tiny strokes of sepia tone on hard maple wood slowly darken to become an integral part of each work of art. I strive to embody my passion for pyrography by portraying my subjects authentically, precisely and realistically through finely tuned detail. My primary joy in producing my work will forever be the unique challenges that this medium presents to me as I literally work “against the grain” to achieve a piece worthy of any collection."

Born in St. Louis, Missouri and now residing in Atlanta, Georgia, Julie Bender grew up with a fascination for nature and drawing animals and has remained on that course all her life. After graduating from the University of Missouri, Columbia in 1981 with a BFA and BSEd, her career took off as a computer artist and years later as a project manager with web and software development firms. It wasn’t until 2002 that she stumbled upon the art of pyrography when she tried her hand at burning her beloved dog's portrait on a wooden cremation urn. Since then her life has never been the same.

As a self-taught artist in her chosen medium, Julie is sensitized by the inherent beauty in all creatures as well as her passion for uniquely celebrating them in her art. The precision in her art combined with her love of animals allows Julie to embody the soul of the animals she depicts while achieving an intricate level of accuracy that is her trademark. Her portraits indicate that a care of detail and an attention to form are as important as the effortless grace in her subjects and melodious balance of the overall composition. “Those factors contribute to making me a wiser individual and help to express my point of view in my work. I realize my art is intensely personal while at the same time entirely universal.”

Ever the consummate perfectionist, she finds her personality is best suited for the extreme level of patience that, she deftly describes, “painting with heat” requires. Julie thrives on a good challenge and pyrography provides that to her with its inherently unforgiving nature. There is a certain level of unpredictability about this medium that she thoroughly embraces and her collectors seem to love. “I have found my voice and purpose through my art. Pyrography is my means for trusting my instincts and opportunity for continued spiritual growth.”

Julie’s profound appreciation for animals, especially endangered species, is felt at a visceral level. She is a proud member of the Society of Animal Artists as well as Artists for Conservation. Her wish is to further ignite the sensibility of those who admire her work to pyrography's place in the world of fine art, while increasing awareness of threatened animals on this planet and contributing a portion of her sales to worthy conservational organizations. Her work is sought by private collectors and is represented by fine art galleries in the U.S. She has been featured in various publications and her art juried into international exhibitions.

Julie knows this is where she needs to be in her life. Her art is about appreciating beauty and celebrating life; it is an outlet for her creativity and a tribute to living in the moment while cherishing the fond memories of the past. She plans to continue developing her art further, finding new ways through wood burning to express her portrayal of the natural world that is her source of continued inspiration. She’s come full circle and art is alive in her heart again.
