Peggy Watkins - Sporting, American and African Wildlife Oil Paintings

Peggy Watkins is an artist residing in Atlanta, Georgia.  Her respect for the natural world and animals exhibits itself in her elegant representational images of wildlife and sporting dogs.   Peggy exhibits on a national level at prestigious venues such as the Southeastern Wildlife Exposition in Charleston, South Carolina, the Waterfowl Festival in Easton, Maryland and the Plantation Wildlife Art Festival in Thomasville, Georgia.

Honors include being selected as the Artist Of The Year as well as Featured Artist for the 2008 Southeastern Wildlife Expo held in Charleston, SC.  Her work has been featured in two articles in Wildlife Art Magazine  (Mar/Apr 2007) and (May/June 2005).  In 2006 she won the Wildlife Art Magazine Publishers Award as well as an Award of Merit at the “Artists For The New Century”  special exhibit held at The Bennington Center for the Arts in Vermont.   Additionally, her work has been featured in Covey Rise Magazine.

Peggy has a signature style which she describes as “painterly”.  "I strive to not have a photographic look to my work because that method of painting would not convey the excitement or memory of the actual experience.    Art is a language…a way of articulating an idea or event without words.    I want to boil complex subject matter down to the essential most poignant elements.  In a painting, if I feel like I can see the wheels turning in the animal's head, then I feel I have done my job.  I intentionally subdue all other elements of a scene to make the individuality of the animal stand out.  In this manner I hope I am communicating my idea and striking a chord in others."

An avid researcher, Peggy spends a great deal of time in the field observing and photographing hunting dogs and wildlife.   Living close to the best quail country in the US she has found a great fondness for painting bird dogs and has come to the conclusion that the way a great dog works and points the birds is an art form in its own right.    She and her husband, Todd, also spend time in Africa each year at their private residence in the wild bush country of Zambia.  The home sits along the Luangwa River directly across from the South Luangwa National Park.  They are spearheading a conservation  initiative for the area to provide the locals an alternative to subsistence poaching  (see www.shumbahouse.com).

Born in Washington State into a Navy family, Peggy began drawing animals at a very young age.  Numerous moves across the US as well as Asia allowed her to live in many different environments.   Although she originally pursued a career in business, Peggy continually worked on her animal drawings in her spare time and taught herself to be proficient with graphite and colored pencil.  She frequently was commissioned for pet portraits.  She moved into oils after attending classes taught by Kristopher Meadows at the Atlanta College of Art and privately in his studio.   She has attended workshops taught by internationally know artists such as Dave Wade and John Banovich, however, her greatest inspiration for painting technique has come from studying the works of non animal painters such as John Singer Sargent, Joaquin Sorolla and Richard Schmid.

Memberships include  Oil Painters of America (Assoc) , Women Artists of The West (WAOW) , and Artists For Conservation (AFC).
