The designs on each crystal are not sandblasted. Copper wheel engraving dates back to the Roman times. The copper wheels produces the most delicate effects. Wheels of various sizes rotate on a spindle as an abrasive and it is mixed with a lubricant. As the grinding wheel presses  the abrasive against the glass, the surface is removed. By adjusting the angle and the pressure of the wheel, cuts of various shapes are achieved which build to form the final image of the engraver's sculpture.
