The magnolia is an ancient species; in the fall the leaves of the leaves of the big leaf magnolia turn dry, the color of parchment, and for a few weeks the huge leaves are a sculpture.
The Cahaba River is the longest free-flowing river in the South, with more species of fish than any river of it's size in North America. Some parts are protected, but the headwaters are in one of the fastest growing urban areas of Alabama. For all its beauty, river protection is very complicated, technical, scientific, expensive and extremely political.
