Ten mallards coming in at sunrise....it's a beautiful sight. I made this scene up and simply placed mallards in various stages of landing. These kind of paintings take a long time to paint. Each duck is almost a separate painting. I sketched each duck on paper first after I blocked in the background on the canvas. I traced off the sketches on separate sheets of tracing paper and laid them out on a white background. I then moved the tracings around trying them in various places to get a pleasing composition. I then taped all the tracings together and moved them in one piece over to the painted canvas background. I then proceeded to paint each individual duck.
