This original Ann Melton sculpture measures 2 1/8" long x 1 1/8" wide x 1 1/8" high and comes with a story card: This beetle has been entertaining observers with its wobbly dung ball rolling for centuries. They roll manure into a ball and the balls are rolled, buried, and eaten, one after another. The habit of burying dung fertilizes the soil, and prevents the development of several manure-breeding flies and other pests. This curious activity occurs until late summer when the female buries a few special balls, which contain a creamy white egg. From this egg hatches a larva which feeds and grows until the ball becomes a hollow shell. After passing through a resting, or pupa stage, the adult breaks out and digs its way to the surface. Because it disappears into the soil and afterwards reappeared, the scarab stood for resurrection in ancient Egypt. As an emblem of eternity, it was placed in tombs, its image carved in stone and precious gems.
